FAQs – Employment at Job and Family Services
- How do I apply?
Résumés are taken at any time and kept on file for one year. It is important to note the field or position you are interested in on your cover letter. We often pull the current résumés when recruiting for positions. Résumés may be mailed to 725 Pine Street, hand delivered to our front desk, or e-mailed to fehrmm@odjfs.state.oh.us.
- How often are there openings?
Through attrition, we have openings every few months. Many positions require specialized skills or degrees.
- Don’t I need to complete an application?
We generally interview using résumés and invite those interviewed to complete a Civil Service application and JFS application addendum.
- Do I need to take a Civil Service test before I am hired?
Yes, if a test is given you must take it and pass it to become certified for the classification you are filling. If no test is given within the first two years of employment, then you become certified automatically. Tests for county positions have not been given in several years.
- Are there any other tests required for new hires?
Yes, you would need to take a keyboarding test and Microsoft Office skills test. Also, we require a driving record check, criminal background check, and fingerprinting prior to hire. Each new employee must pass a post-offer physical and drug screen.
- What is the probationary period?
The new-employee probationary period is 120 days. You would have a written evaluation at 60 days and 120 days. Employees may be terminated within the first 120 days without cause.
- Are all positions available to the public?
No. All openings at Job and Family Services are posted internally for five days. We may advertise concurrently. Our philosophy is to promote from within so we make every effort to recruit internally, if we have qualified applicants.
